You don't apply at the consulate itself. The consulate, the embassy, only reviews your file and issues the decision, it doesn't run appointments and doesn't meet applicants in person unless it needs to request extra documents from you. Appointments and biometrics are handled by VFS Global, the same structure as most other Schengen countries. If something is missing, they contact you, you don't need to chase them, and a document request usually just means the original file was incomplete, exactly what a visa consultant should catch before submission. The only reliable way to check progress yourself is the official online tracker, using your application number, found on the receipt from your appointment, and your last name. Yes, this exists as an option: you can email the embassy directly to request your passport back before a decision is made. Be clear about what it means, though: your case is cancelled, no decision, approved or refused, will be issued, you're simply told when your passport is ready to collect at VFS. It's a genuine option if you urgently need your passport for something else, but the time and fee spent on that application won't lead anywhere, so treat it as a last resort, not a way to speed things up.

The sponsor is whoever pays for the trip. If you fund it yourself, your own employment and bank documents are what matter. If a family member pays, for example a spouse, the financial documents that count are theirs: passport, proof of employment, and a bank statement showing they can cover your costs, usually with a short letter confirming they are sponsoring you. For business travel, the sponsor is normally the company, which provides an invitation letter and, where asked, proof it will cover the expenses. We confirm whose documents are needed before your file is prepared.

Schengen countries share refusal records through the VIS system, so a prior refusal in another Schengen country is visible to Portugal too. Normally not. For most Portuguese Schengen applications from the UAE you attend your appointment for biometrics and document submission, not a formal interview. The consulate keeps the right to request a personal interview, but for straightforward tourist and business files it is uncommon.
