A case shared recently in an online immigration forum is a useful second approval to put next to our family case, because the applicant is different in almost every way: one traveller, applying to Canada for the first time, with a passport that holds a few less common visas. He described a five-day birthday trip to Niagara Falls. The decision came about six weeks after he applied. The post does not say where he applied from, and the processing time he quotes is the one published for his own country, so timelines from the UAE can differ.

The case in short

What the file contained

The file contained:

Why this file was easy to read

We cannot see the whole file or the officer’s notes, so we cannot say what decided it. But several things match what we recommend:

What the timeline looked like

About six weeks in total. That is longer than our family case, and within the 30 to 60 days we commonly see for applications from the UAE. IRCC publishes processing times by country, and the applicant compared his result with the time published for his own country, so do not read his number as a promise for the UAE. Our Canada requirements guide explains each step, and IRCC describes the passport step on its page After you apply for a visitor visa.

What one case does and does not prove

One approval is not a rule. Processing times depend on the country, the season and the number of applications, and every file is judged on its own. This applicant also had a stable job, property income and a valid UK visa, which not every applicant has. Visa approval always remains at the discretion of the Canadian authorities.

What it does show is that a first application can work when the file answers the questions an officer is likely to have.

The short version

A first application to Canada does not need a long travel history. It needs a clear purpose, one cover letter that explains the trip, the onward plans and the ties, ordinary proof of work and property, and an answer ready for anything unusual in the passport. After approval there is one more step: IRCC asks for your passport so the visa can be placed in it.
